Good to know
FIFO
First in, first out: the oldest stock is treated as sold first, so closing stock is valued at the latest prices.
Weighted average
Every unit carries the average cost of all units available. Prices are smoothed out.
Which to use
Accounting standards in India allow FIFO or weighted average. Pick one, use it every year, and confirm with your auditor.
Rising prices
When prices rise, FIFO shows higher closing stock and profit; weighted average shows a little less.
