Good to know
The rule
The tax-free part is the lowest of three: HRA received, rent minus 10% of basic plus DA, and 50% of basic plus DA (40% outside the eight cities).
Old regime only
The new tax regime does not allow HRA exemption. If you pay high rent, compare both regimes before you choose.
Landlord PAN
If rent is more than ₹1 lakh a year, give your employer the landlord's PAN (or their declaration if they have none) with the rent receipts.
Keep proof
Keep the rent agreement and bank transfer records. Rent paid to a parent is allowed if they really own the home and declare the rent as income.
HRA, TDS and payslips worked out every month
USR Payroll works out HRA exemption, TDS and payslips for every employee, every month: ₹29 ($0.33) per employee a month with the USR People Suite, or ₹49 ($0.56) on its own with HRIS, leave and attendance.
