Good to know

Which states levy PT

Professional tax is a state tax. Many states levy it and some do not; Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are among those that do not. The Constitution caps it at ₹2,500 a person a year.

Slabs used here

Karnataka: nil below ₹25,000 a month, then ₹200 (₹300 in February). Maharashtra: men nil up to ₹7,500, ₹175 up to ₹10,000, then ₹200 (₹300 in February); women nil up to ₹25,000. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh: nil up to ₹15,000, ₹150 up to ₹20,000, then ₹200. Gujarat: nil below ₹12,000, then ₹200.

Employer duties

Register in each state where you have employees, deduct PT from salary every month, then pay and file on that state's schedule. In some states the company also pays PT for its own registration.

Check before each year

States revise slabs from time to time. Check the current table on the state's website before each financial year, and use the 'Other state' option for any state not listed here.
